An historical review Despite its lack of speeding, brutal rage, Rigor Sardonicous is one of the darkest, scariest death metal bands around. Utterly slow and terribly progressive, this could just about qualify as doom metal, bearing in mind that these guitars aren't heavy either, not in the traditional sense. What you have is uberslow fuzz, but subtle. The heaviness here comes from the darkness. This music feels as if it is coming at you from some cavern, while the basement vocal rumblings sound like a groggy awakening demon. Extremely unique, "Principia Sardonica" fuses doom's progression, death's vocal approach and gothic's permeating atmosphere to create one of the best metal releases of the year.
12/04 Rigor Sardonicous is my vision of death made flesh. I have now heard the true soundtrack of the Apocalypse for the first time. I have felt the embodied death of it's pale white horse for the first time. I have felt it's scythe, tasted it's sharpness. I have touched the unavoidable End. I have taken up the journey through the cold wasteland and I do not know whether he will let me return. Death is no bringer of mercy, no relief from the torments of life. And Evil has time, all the time in the world for no one can evade him. And his entrance music, his announcement, is a new dimension in Doom. Still slower, still heavier, still deeper than all that have been there up to now. Rigor Sardonicous gives the song of death a new name and overshadows all others with their crushing corpulence. Never before have I heard anything so dragging and dread-filled. Here stands the End; here I am caught.
